सेंचुरियन वनडे में दक्षिण अफ्रीका को 8 विकेट से हराते ही भारतीय टीम ने एक नया रिकॉर्ड अपने नाम कर लिया। दक्षिण अफ्रीका को उन्हीं की सरजमीं पर हराकर भारतीय टीम ने 25 सालों का सूखा खत्म करने काम किया। विराट कोहली की कप्तानी में दक्षिण अफ्रीका की जमीन पर भारतीय टीम पहली बाई लैटरल वनडे सीरीज जीतने में कामयाब हुई है। दक्षिण अफ्रीका के लिए यह सीरीज बेहद खराब गुजरा, सीरीज के शुरुआत में ही फाफ ड्यू प्लेसी, क्विंटन डी कॉक और एबी डी विलियर्स चोट की वजह से बाहर हो गए। हालांकि, अंतिम तीन मैचों के लिए एबी डी विलियर्स टीम का हिस्सा रहे लेकिन वह अपने बल्ले से ज्यादा योगदान नहीं दे पाए। भारतीय टीम के कप्तान विराट कोहली ने इस सीरीज में टीम के साथ ज्यादा फेर बदल नहीं किया। केदार जाधव के चोटिल होने के बाद श्रेयस अय्यर कुछ मैचों के लिए टीम में जगह बनाने में कामयाब रहे, वहीं आखिरी मैच में भुवनेश्वर कुमार की जगह शार्दुल ठाकुर को टीम में जगह दी गई। टेस्ट सीरीज के तीन मैचों में लगातार टीम में बदलाव करने वाले कोहली वनडे सीरीज में विनिंग कॉम्बिनेशन के साथ कोई छेड़छाड़ नहीं किया।
हालांकि, टीम के मिडल ऑर्डर को लगातार मौके देने पर सवाल उठते रहे, आखिरी मैच में उम्मीद की जा रही थी कि टीम के मिडल ऑर्डर में बदलाव किए जाएंगे लेकिन ऐसा नहीं हुआ। मनीष पांडे, दिनेश कार्तिक, अक्षर पटेल और मोहम्मद शमी को सीरीज के किसी भी मैच में प्लेइंग इलेवन में जगह नहीं दी गई। सीरीज जीतने के बाद अंतिम मैच को भी कप्तान ने हल्के में नहीं लिया और टीम में कोई बदलाव करना जरूरी नहीं समझा।
विराट कोहली के इस फैसले से फैंस नाराज नजर आए। सोशल मीडिया पर ट्वीट के जरिए लोग लगातार धोनी और अय्यर को टीम जगह देने पर सवाल उठा रहे हैं। फैंस के मुताबिक दिनेश कार्तिक और मनीष पांडे को एक भी मैच में मौका नहीं देना गलत था। मनीष पांडे अय्यर से बेहतर खिलाड़ी हैं और टीम के मिडल ऑर्डर को वो मजबूती प्रदान कर सकते थे। वहीं धोनी के मौजूदा फॉर्म को देखते हुए फैंस उनकी जगह कार्तिक की वकालत करते नजर आए।
