दक्षिण अफ्रीका के खिलाफ पहले टेस्ट मैच में टेस्ट क्रिकेट के बेस्ट खिलाड़ी माने जाने वाले अजिंक्य रहाणे को टीम में जगह नहीं दी गई। विदेशी दौरों पर रहाणे का रिकॉर्ड काफी अच्छा रहा है, ऐसे में उन्हें टीम से बाहर निकालने का कारण उनका मौजूदा फॉर्म हो सकता है। श्रीलंका के खिलाफ तीनों टेस्ट मैच में रहाणे का बल्ला बिल्कुल खामोश रहा था। हालांकि, रहाणे ने भारत की तरफ से कई अहम मैचों में रन बनाकर टीम को संकट से निकालने का काम किया है। पिछली बार जब भारतीय टीम दक्षिण अफ्रीका दौरे पर गई थी तो रहाणे का प्रदर्शन शानदार रहा था। लेकिन पहले मैच में रहाणे की जगह रोहित शर्मा को टीम में शामिल किया गया है। पिछले कुछ समय से रोहित कमाल के फॉर्म में हैं, यही वजह रही होगी कि टीम मैनेजमेंट ने रोहित को रहीणे जैसे बड़े खिलाड़ी की जगह टीम में शामिल किया है। विदेशी दौरों पर रहाणे का औसत 53.44 का रहा है।
रहाणे को टीम से बाहर रखे जाने की खबर के बाद ट्विटर के जरिए फैंस ने अपना गुस्सा जाहिर किया। दक्षिण अफ्रीका के खिलाफ पहले टेस्ट में रहाणे को नहीं खिलाने से क्रिकेट फैंस काफी नाराज हैं। ज्यादातर फैंस विराट कोहली के इस फैसले को गलत बता रहे हैं। फैंस का मानना है कि किसी भी खिलाड़ी का अगर एक सीरीज खराब जाता है तो इसका मतलब ये नहीं कि आप उसे टीम से ही बाहर कर दें।

रहाणे की जगह वनडे और टी-20 में वैसे भी एक ऑप्शनल के रूप में है। अगर सलामी बल्लेबाज चोटिल हो जाता है तो बैकअप के तौर पर रहाणे को टीम में खिलाया जाता है। ऐसे में अगर टेस्ट टीम से भी उनकी जगह छिनती है तो फैंस को गुस्सा आना लाजमी है।
