Historically, the period after Makar Sankranti has often heralded major political changes in the state. Recent developments suggest this tradition might repeat in 2025, with whispers of alliance shifts involving Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. Nitish Kumar's political journey: Back and forth In January 2024, Nitish Kumar shocked many by leaving the Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) and rejoining the NDA (National Democratic Alliance). However, media reports now hint at the possibility of Nitish reconsidering his allegiance. His alleged dissatisfaction with the BJP has sparked rumours of a return to the Grand Alliance. Meanwhile, the BJP-led NDA has claimed that over a dozen Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leaders are in talks with its members. Nitish’s silence on these reports has further fueled speculation, as such reticence has historically preceded significant political moves in Bihar. Signs of strain between JD(U) and BJP Nitish’s recent visit to Delhi has raised eyebrows. While he paid respects to the family of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, he avoided meeting BJP leaders and skipped a crucial meeting called by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Adding to the tension, the BJP’s Delhi unit refused to allocate seats to JD(U) for the upcoming assembly elections. In response, JD(U) leaders Sanjay Jha and Lallan Singh announced plans to contest independently, indicating growing friction between the allies. RJD hopes for Nitish's return The RJD, led by Tejashwi Yadav, is closely monitoring the situation and remains optimistic about Nitish’s potential return. The party has made several unsuccessful attempts to bring him back into the fold. In February 2024, during a critical trust vote, RJD’s efforts to secure Nitish’s support backfired when two of its MLAs, Neelam Devi and Chetan Anand, defected. Despite this, the RJD remains hopeful, especially as Nitish’s relationship with the BJP appears increasingly strained. Post-Makar Sankranti: A turning point? Many analysts believe that significant political developments could occur after Kharmas (the inauspicious period before Makar Sankranti). If Nitish decides to part ways with the NDA, the opposition’s INDIA alliance is expected to extend support, potentially allowing him to form a government with backing from within and outside the assembly. Such a move could challenge the BJP’s dominance in Bihar and have repercussions at the national level. However, a split within the JD(U) cannot be ruled out, as key figures like Sanjay Jha and Lallan Singh appear to be leaning towards the BJP. Another possibility is that Nitish may dissolve the state assembly and call for mid-term elections, further complicating the political scenario. Nitish Kumar’s future: End of an era? Speculation about Nitish Kumar’s retirement has been rife. He declared the 2020 elections as his “last election” and reiterated in 2024 that the 2025 polls would be fought under Tejashwi Yadav’s leadership. Amid these rumours, calls for conferring the Bharat Ratna on Nitish have come from leaders across party lines, including BJP MP Giriraj Singh, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, and JD(U)’s Sanjay Jha. If Nitish indeed plans to exit active politics, 2025 could mark the end of a political era in Bihar. For now, all eyes are on the developments following Kharmas, which may reveal the next chapter in Bihar’s dynamic political narrative. As Bihar awaits its next political twist, the coming weeks will be crucial in shaping the state’s governance and alliances for the future.
