Haryana Elections 2024: पूर्व बैंक कर्मचारी नेता प्रकाश ने 2014 में यूको बैंक के मुख्य प्रबंधक पद से स्वैच्छिक सेवानिवृत्ति ली, यह कहते हुए कि वह किसानों और मजदूरों के संघर्षों के साथ-साथ सामाजिक मुद्दों पर समर्पित होना चाहते हैं। उनकी गैर-राजनीतिक संस्था जन संघर्ष समिति स्थानीय स्तर पर व्यापारियों और आम लोगों के मुद्दों को उठाने के लिए जानी जाती है। प्रकाश के करीबी सहयोगी और किसान नेता दयानंद पूनिया के अनुसार, 2018 में हरियाणा रोडवेज कर्मचारियों की लंबी हड़ताल के दौरान पुलिस हिरासत में उनके साथ “निर्दयता से अत्याचार” किया गया था। 2020-21 में तीन कृषि कानूनों के खिलाफ आंदोलन के दौरान भी उन्हें गिरफ्तार किया गया था, सीपीआई(एम) हरियाणा के सचिव सुरेंद्र सिंह ने कहा, “ओम प्रकाश भिवानी में लोगों की समस्याओं को उठाने और महिलाओं व वंचित वर्गों की सुरक्षा के लिए लड़ने का सबसे लोकप्रिय चेहरा हैं।” हरियाणा विधानसभा चुनावों में सीपीआई(एम) के उम्मीदवार ने आखिरी बार 1987 में जीत दर्ज की थी, जब तोहाना से हरपाल सिंह विजयी हुए थे। उस चुनाव में वामपंथी दलों ने देवी लाल की लोक दल (बी) के साथ गठबंधन किया था, और सीपीआई(एम) व सीपीआई दोनों को एक-एक सीट दी गई थी, जिसमें शाहाबाद से सीपीआई के हरनाम सिंह ने भी जीत हासिल की थी।

A close associate of Prakash, farmer leader Dayanand Poonia, says he was “brutally tortured” in police custody during a long strike by staffers of state-owned Haryana roadways in 2018. “He was also arrested when he led farmers in Bhiwani district during the agitation against the three farm laws in 2020-21.” CPI(M) Haryana secretary Surender Singh says: “Om Prakash is the most popular face in Bhiwani for leading people in distress, and for fighting for the safety of women and other deprived sections.” The only time a CPI(M) candidate has won in Haryana Assembly elections was when Harpal Singh emerged victorious in Tohana in 1987. In that election, the Left parties contested in alliance with the Lok Dal (B), formed by Devi Lal, who was at the height of his popularity then. The CPI(M) and CPI were given one each seat, and both won, including the CPI’s Harnam Singh from Shahabad.
